It’s important to appreciate that pain is your body's way of letting you know something is wrong; an injury has occurred. Unfortunately, this gets lost in today's modern society in which people are encouraged to take painkillers & not consider or correct the actual injury. At Manchester Osteopathy, we diagnose and treat the complaint, correct posture, and address any underlying issues ensuring we comprehensively treat your injury.
Poor posture greatly increases the likelihood of developing neck and shoulder pain. A trauma, i.e., whiplash injuries, can cause this; however, most of the time, it is caused by poor use of the body, i.e., holding it out of its natural alignment for long periods. A common poor factor is a forward head posture and anteriorly rotated shoulders. The illustration below highlights common mistakes people make that can cause this.
Over time holding our bodies in this way can lead to a fixed/compromised posture which, if it isn’t addressed, can become permanent as some muscles become chronically tight.
The prolonged use of mobile phones, tablets, and laptops greatly increases the potential of a forward head posture developing. The diagram below illustrates the weight increase placed on the muscles, ligaments, and discs of the neck the further the head is held.
Muscle strains
The head coming in front of the body creates a leverage effect. This increases the strain on the neck muscles and discs, as illustrated above. Over time, this increased strain will cause small tears in the neck muscles, typically in the muscles at the back of the neck and shoulders resulting In injury and pain.
Headaches
Injuries to the muscles and joints of the neck can cause headaches. This can even occur without pain being felt in the neck muscle from which the pain is being referred. Myofascial trigger points form in muscles that have been strained over a long period of time. The diagram below illustrates the common referral patterns from trigger points in the neck and shoulders that can cause headaches. Mark has written a thesis on Trigger points and thoroughly understands the location of the trigger points that refer to the neck and the treatment that needs to be applied to correct this. He also has 15 years of experience successfully treating this complaint.
How we can help?
As a trained Osteopath Mark can both diagnose the structure in the body causing the pain, identify the postural pattern contributing to the problem and treat, and correct both. This approach will relieve the symptoms, but also help to prevent other conditions from forming. Mark will also provide the necessary corrective advice to further prevent the issue from returning.
