During your first visit, which will typically take an hour, extensive consultation will be taken with questions asked regarding your symptoms, the cause of the injury, your lifestyle, and your medical history.
You will then receive an extensive examination to help diagnose your problem. This will involve assessing your posture and range of motion through all joints that could be contributing to the complaint. Restricted joints and therefore compromised posture are commonly caused by the muscles that have become tight and shortened. To identify the muscles contributing to the problem, the tone of the muscles are assessed through palpation and muscle length tests. This will be followed by Orthopaedic examinations to distinguish the precise structure causing the symptoms.
You will also receive treatment during your first visit. This involves any necessary corrective procedures that need to be carried out. At the end of the session, you will be given a diagnosis and an explanation of what is causing your pain. Most of the time, these are postural, along with any lifestyle factors aggravating/maintaining the condition. The session will finish with relevant exercise, nutrition, or dietary advice.
Whether your complaint was a result of a trauma, repetitive use of a muscle, or group of muscles as Osteopaths we always treat the injured structure producing the pain, and any postural concerns contributing to the injury.
It is very common for misaligned, restricted, or even hypermobile joints to be caused by the muscle crossing the affected joints being either excessively tight or weak. Most of the time, muscle tightness is caused by overuse; it can also result from a previous trauma that hasn't been treated. To address this, as Osteopaths, we use a combination of massage, stretching, and joint articulation/adjustments. The prior examination would have informed us which joints are restricted and the direction they are restricted, and how these restrictions relate to the structure/curvatures of the spine and global posture. One of our primary skills as Osteopaths is knowing the direction to articulate and adjust the restricted joints to restore movement and correct alignment.
The Osteopathic approach of encouraging a healing response in the structure or structures causing your pain, and also correcting any postural problems will reduce the likelihood of any other complaints developing. A good example is low back pain affecting someone's walking, or running pattern. This could compromise the low back, hip, knee, and ankle joints causing disorders in these areas of the body months, sometimes years later. The healing effects on the primary complaint, coupled with the global improvements to posture greatly reduce the chance of these secondary problems occurring.
